The Halifax Humane Society shelter adopted 406 animals in December, pushing the number of total adoptions for the year over 4,000.
Adoptions increased by 20 percent in 2012 following an increase of 23 percent in 2011. Adoptions reached the highest level in the society's 75-year history in 2012. It set four new monthly records during the year, including December.
The society's new Meet Your Match program played a part in the record adoption year. In the program, pets undergo an assessment that sorts them into one of three colors: orange, purple or green. When potential adopters arrive, they take a short quiz to determine which color is the best match, simplifying the process of finding a new best friend.
In April, the Redinger Spay/Neuter Clinic opened in Daytona Beach, and will provide about 11,000 subsidized spay/neuter surgeries annually.
In September, the humane society was awarded the National CLASSY Award as the top non-profit for animals in the United States.
