VERO BEACH - It was a heartbreaking 0-47 loss for the St. Edward's Pirates varsity football team and an uplifting win for the Trinity Christian Academy Eagles last Friday, Sept. 7 on the Pirate's home turf.
The Pirates had first possession on field but didn't produce any points. Then it was the Eagles turn, and they wasted no time in scoring, Tyler Aziz had an 85 yard return at 9:52 in the first quarter, but the extra point was blocked.
During the first quarter, the Pirates had their best chance for scoring, a fumble by the Eagles, called first by the referee as a touchdown was brought back to the point of the fumble at the Pirates 34 yard line.
The Pirates were close to scoring, but the defensive line of the Eagles made the Pirates running game next to impossible. The pirate players were blocked and tackled early, at the line of scrimmage or for a loss of yards.
Eagle Mike Cole was the next to put a touchdown on the board, with James Russell-Silva making the extra point. Silva made six of seven field goal attempts for the night.
The second quarter showed the quarterback skill and technique of Marquion Lane. Much like the NFL Eagles quarterback, Michael Vick, Lane was unafraid to carry the ball during an opening in the defensive line and also played center back on defense.
"The team was blocking and everything came together," said Lane. "The offensive line was blocking and helped make the plays."
His arm was a rocket, able to nail a 50-yard hail-mary to the end zone, connecting with Julian Delgado for a 0 - 19 score.
On the receiving end of a punt from Pirates Falvey Cullen, Lane ran the ball for an 85 yard return touchdown, but was taken back on a flag downfield against the Eagles. Lane made his own touchdown two plays later, carrying the ball 43 yards to a touchdown.
"This was not a pretty win," said Eagles head coach Allen Johnson. "There are little things, flags and penalties that we were making. We need to stop making those."
The Eagles' offense kept the Pirate's defense guessing and out-maneuvered the defense to score.
The Eagles scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, Aziz reaching the end zone on a six-play drive and Lane intercepted a throw by Carson Proctor, ending the half at 0 - 40.
The Pirates defense kicked in after the half, the Eagles' offense scoring once more in the fourth, a rushing touchdown from Mike Cole.
Pirates' Head Coach Bill Motta said that they were "out-athleted."
"They came out and played a great game and beat us in all three aspects of the game," he said. "We were just outplayed everywhere. We need to block more up front and they had way too much penetration for us and we have a running game going."
Trinity Christian Academy will play Calvary Christian High School, 1687 West Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach, at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14.
St. Edwards will play Calvary Christian High School at home for a district game Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
