New Smyrna Beach congregation to celebrate more than a year officially welcoming the LGBT community

The United Church of Christ in New Smyrna Beach will celebrate its first year as an "Open and Affirming" congregation, with special services at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.

In the language of the UCC denomination, "Open and Affirming" means a church embraces all people, regardless of their individual human condition, and especially welcomes without judgment people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (the LGBT community).

Kathy Church of the national UCC's Coalition for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns, will attend the Oct. 7 services to present a certificate of recognition. The New Smyrna Beach congregation is also affiliated with the Disciples of Christ, and a second certificate will be presented from that denomination.

The Oct. 7 services will feature special music, personal testimonies, and a reception. The UCC New Smyrna Beach is located at 203 Washington St.

For more information, call (386) 428-2352.
