JENSEN BEACH - Sons of Norway, Gulfstream Lodge No. 3-514, will host the 41st annual Leif Erikson Viking Boat Regatta and Festival on Oct. 13 at the Jensen Beach Causeway Park between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
This family festival is free and open to the public. This year honors the 1012th year anniversary of Leif Erikson's discovery of North America.
The highlight of the event will be the Viking boat rowing and sailing races starting at 12:30 p.m.
Lodge teams use 24-foot replicas of Viking ships, which are meant to commemorate Erikson's voyage to North America nearly 500 years prior to the history-making sail by Christopher Columbus in 1492.
Five or more boats will participate in Saturday's races. Each boat carries oarsmen and coxswain. There will be a qualifying heat, men's or mixed crew, a race of Viking women's crews and final men's or mixed crew races.
Sons of Norway Lodges from Florida will join in the festivities. Tables offering Scandinavian foods, refreshments, a mini-flea market, Scandinavian jewelry, gifts, a cake wheel and traditional Norwegian rosemaling (handicrafts) by Monika Hoerl will be available.
The Leif Erikson festival on the Treasure Coast began in 1970 and has a long-standing history. Please bring folding chairs and sun protection to watch the boat races.
