Ben Johnson, 62
Glenwood
Volusia County Sheriff
Incumbent
Q. What do you see as the biggest issue for the office you are seeking?
A: The sale and use of illegal narcotics and the spin-off crimes that have drugs as their root cause.
Q. What are your qualifications for the office you are seeking?
A: Extensive law enforcement experience - 12 years as sheriff, 26 years as deputy, supervisory experience as Sergeant and Lieutenant, assignments of high responsibility (District Commander, Watch Commander, SWAT Entry Leader), community involvement, president of the Florida Sheriffs Association, a record of proven leadership and prudent fiscal and personnel management.
Q. If you win, what's the first issue you will tackle?
A: I'm very proud of the reduction in crime (51.5 percent in the violent crime category and 12.6 percent overall) that has occurred since I took office. If re-elected, my top priority will continue to be sustaining the crime reductions through effective and aggressive enforcement and wise use of personnel, resources and technology.
Q. If you lose, will you continue in politics?
A: I have always found ways to serve the community through various civic endeavors, starting long before I was elected sheriff. I will continue to do so after I leave office. However, I have no plans to seek another elective position after I am no longer sheriff.
