MARTIN COUNTY - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties is planning a golf tournament to raise $20,000 to fund its mentorship programs in the region.
In Martin County, the group teaches career skills to eighth graders at Murray and Stuart middle schools by matching them with mentors from businesses across the county. The program teaches skills, such as workplace etiquette, appropriate dress, resume writing and even pays a stipend.
Its Dec. 7 fundraiser is set for Hobe Sound Golf Club.
Treasure Coast Estate Buyers and Publix Supermarkets are sponsoring the event, which features golf, a dinner reception and auction. Organizers are asking all players to bring an unwrapped toy for a child participating in Big Brothers Big Sisters programs.
"This is a way to raise money, collect toys for the children in our program and we're working with our partners to get more visibility in the community," said Aleisha M. Garcia, spokeswoman for Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties.
"Golfers will enjoy the pristine setting, a challenging game and the chance to win exciting prizes."
The day's charitable giving will help children in both the short- and long-term, beginning with a holiday party on Dec. 15.
Toys collected from the golf fundraiser will go to children at a party at The Grace Place in Stuart, about a week later, organizers said.
Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin counties is currently accepting sponsors, foursomes, auction donations and raffle prizes to be featured at the golf tournament.
Registration is $250 per golfer and $900 per foursome for players who register and pay by Nov. 16. Participants can register online at www.SantaOpen.com.
