TREASURE COAST --
Licensed dental hygienists will want to consider a new course being offered by the Indian River State College Corporate and Community Training Institute.
The course is designed to train licensed dental hygienists to safely administer dental anesthesia under the supervision of a Florida- licensed dentist.
Those interested have three opportunities to take the course: Nov. 26 to Dec. 15, Dec. 28 to Jan. 26 and Jan. 25 to Feb. 23.
The course has two parts, a 30-hour online component that covers the theoretical aspects of administration of local anesthetics and a 30-hour clinical component that consists of six-hours of observation and 24-hours of clinical experience.
The online component must be completed prior to the 30-hour clinical portion, and can be started any time after a student registers.
Qualified faculty will evaluate the individual performance of each student. The clinical component includes electronic models which are used first, and culminates with students successfully anesthetizing targeted areas of the oral cavity. Students will be expected to participate as both clinicians and patients.
The course costs $995 and will be taught by IRSC instructor Alexander Van Ovost. The clinical portion of this course will be held in the dental clinic in the Mary L. Fields Health Science Center on the IRSC main campus in Fort Pierce Fridays 6-9 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
